When is infant therapy indicated?

  • Difficulty latching

  • Coughing during feeds

  • Feedings lasting longer than 30 minutes

  • Maternal pain during latch

  • Frequent break in seal during feeds

  • Audible breathing during feeds

  • Difficulty with weight gain

  • Excessive gagging

  • Inability to transition to purees or solid foods

  • Difficulty transitioning to age appropriate cup or straw

What can I expect during infant feeding therapy?

  • Assessment of current bottle system with recommendations on flow rate

  • Positioning and compensatory strategies to ensure safety of swallow

  • Developing home program of oral-motor exercises and suck training activities

  • Transition to breastfeeding or bottle as needed

  • Weighted feeds to determine transfer at the breast

  • Transition to spoon feeding and purees

  • Transition to finger-feeding with soft solids
